Why Child Care

Carmel & Naccasha LLP is rooted in our beautiful Central Coast community. Our team is committed to giving back to many local organizations and causes through donations, pro bono or reduced legal work, and volunteering to ensure that future generations can enjoy the area as much as we do. Childcare is one of the causes we support and encourage. The way we see it, the Central Coast’s child care offerings should be enhanced to improve parents’ access to quality childcare.

The importance of available child care solutions clicked for our firm as a result of an event that happened a few years ago. One of our great employees was having difficulties with a child, not wanting to complete homework at home. Frustrated and feeling like there were no other options, the employee discussed their predicament in passing without expecting a childcare solution from her employer. We came up with the idea that the employee could bring their child to work, and the child could do homework in the office.

Not long after, the child started coming to work with their parent. The employee was no longer worried about their child not completing schoolwork, and the child had new motivation to stay on track while sitting in the office. While this story shows a simple fix that helped one of our valued employees, there is a wider need for more permanent and available child care options.

While there is no clear answer as to how to solve the child care shortage on the Central Coast, we know that we can do better and that we support the existing child care facilities. For these reasons, Carmel & Naccasha is a proud supporter of the Economic Vitality Corporation’s COVID-19 Child Care Supply Drive and has agreed to match up to $2,500 in legal services for a SLO County child care center owner or employee if the goal of $2,500 in donations is reached by January 18, 2021. Donations may be made directly to CAPSLO.

In addition to pledging money, Caramel & Naccasha team members play vital roles in various child care organizations. For example, Z Naccasha is a Committee Member of the We Are the Care Initiative and Ryan Andrews is a Board Member of the SLO Y and Chair of their Annual Support Campaign. Each year, our Y raises these funds through the Annual Support Campaign. In 2020, the SLO County Y assisted local youth and families with over $300,000 in financial assistance (scholarships) and program support to participate in Y programs and services. Please consider donating so no one is turned away.

Local organizations fighting to expand child care services include Economic Vitality Corporation (EVC) of San Luis Obispo County, First 5 SLO CountyChild Care Planning Council SLO County, San Luis Obispo County YMCA, and the Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County (CAPSLO)

***UPDATE*** As of January 15, 2021, the EVC and CAPSLO have collected at least 6 barrels of supplies from local businesses and individual community members, as well as $3,045 from 21 donors.

While the supply drive only lasts until January 27, 2021, CAPSLO is always collecting donations. Please donate here.
