Honoring the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation
Every February, the U.S. honors the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our country’s history. Established by Carter G. Woodson in 1926, it is commonly said that he selected February to encompass the birthdays of two great Americans who played a prominent role in shaping Black history, namely Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, whose birthdays are the 12th and the 14th, respectively.
This year’s theme is African Americans and the Arts. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences.
As we celebrate Black History Month 2024, Carmel & Naccasha would like to acknowledge the efforts of local organizations such as NAACP San Luis Obispo County, the San Luis Obispo Diversity Coalition and R.A.C.E. Matters SLO for their ongoing efforts in promoting a more diverse and tolerant community.
