With nearly 25 years of legal experience, Carmel & Naccasha LLP Managing Partner and Co-Founder Ziyad Naccasha has extensive background providing strategic counsel in the areas of business and corporate law, litigation, insurance and reinsurance coverage and defense. Ziyad developed much of his diverse expertise working, doing business and living in Chicago for the first 12 years of his career. That experience has been significantly enhanced by his work in San Luis Obispo, the city where he grew up and has had the opportunity to raise his children and work for the last decade. Ziyad’s background handling a variety of complex legal issues and disputes in combination with his portfolio of work makes him exceptionally knowledgeable and approachable when it comes to the legal needs relating to businesses of all sizes.

Ziyad guides domestic and international companies, their shareholders and officers in a variety of matters relating to their formation, business structure, real property, insurance needs, and risk management. He also serves as one of the firm’s litigators, and has extensively litigated commercial, public agency, employment, real property and insurance matters. His unique professional progression gives him an edge in understanding the nuances of both business law and insurance issues.

Ziyad began his law career in insurance defense and coverage, writing and litigating insurance policies and disputes. Practicing in those areas of law introduced him to the broader complexities of business transactional work which he found to be extremely rewarding – helping business and community leaders figure out, sort through and find solutions to the challenges they face. That background and experience equates to a thorough understanding and ability to draft superior agreements which also produce a greater likelihood that those agreements will be upheld in court.

Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Ziyad was able to re-locate with his family to San Luis Obispo in time for him to attend local schools. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, he went on to receive his law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1990 and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar that same year. He was admitted to the California State Bar in 2002 and moved his family back to San Luis Obispo at that time. Ziyad also is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Central District of California and for the Northern District of Illinois.

Ziyad represents public agency clients as well as private businesses and individuals. Ziyad is currently District Counsel to the Mission Hills Community Services District. Ziyad also serves as Local District Counsel for the Templeton Community Services District.

Community involvement is also keenly important to Ziyad, his family and the firm. He is actively involved on the boards of a number of local nonprofits and organizations supporting the arts, children and important local business interests. In fact, he was recognized in 2014 as Heritage Oaks Bank’s selection for the Special Guest distinction at the Spokes Salutes event for being “generous with his time personally and professionally” in his various roles with local nonprofits and other organizations. Also in 2014, Ziyad was recognized as one of the Pacific Coast Business Times’ Who’s Who in Professional Services, an honor given to individuals based on the “quality and quantity of their effort advising clients.”

In his leisure time, Ziyad enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is an avid hiker and runner and he loves classic cars.
